BATH DESIGN WINNER: SUSANNE KELLEY DESIGN

Master bathrooms often assume roles beyond their practical ones. When Susanne Kelley was entrusted with the redesign of this bath in Bridgehampton, she endeavored to increase its size while infusing it with personality. She carved out more space by removing the adjacent master closet and used a wood-grain marble tile on the floor and countertop to foster a calming mood. “If you’re looking for Hamptons Zen, you’ve come to the right bathroom,” says judge Austin Handler, while judge Matthew Patrick Smyth praises the space’s “straightforward use of clean lines, textures, and materials.”

Innovation in Design Award

Susanne was recognized for her “clarity of vision” by HC&G Magazine at its second annual Innovation in Design Awards ceremony held at Guild Hall in East Hampton. The awards recognize the very best design projects in the Hamptons. A finalist in the Interior Design category, HC&G editors had this to say about Susanne’s work:

Susanne Kelley Design
As all Hamptons designers know, it’s hard to compete with the ocean. Susanne Kelley’s mandate while decorating this waterfront house in East Hampton was to celebrate the views while giving character to the combined living and dining rooms. The client requested an all-white interior, so Kelley carefully introduced small moments of drama into the large-windowed, sky-lit space, starting with an enormous photograph of the ocean by Robert Bery above the fireplace. The intense blue echoes the surf outside while introducing a beautiful burst of color into the otherwise largely monochromatic space. A glass sculpture and side table and a Lucite coffee table further underscore Kelley’s clarity of vision.

Susanne Kelley’s designs incorporate a love of the beach, the sea, the natural world, and all that is calming and refreshing about island life. Her work is grounded in warm elegance and imbued with a distinct playful sense of the environment. Her design creations are serene, fresh spaces that delight at every curve and corner, all with an exquisite artist’s eye and vision for color, texture, structure, form, and function.

“Many homes in the Hamptons have very high ceilings. My design for this project was to come up with a solution to fill the air space in the room. Collaborating with the client led us to Helen Bilt, a lighting designer in Sag Harbor. We worked together to create an art installation of her urchin collection. It is very whimsical and has a contemporary feel.”
